In Indiana we have 170+ high schools with 1:1 English classrooms through our InACCESS (Affordable Classroom Computers for Every Secondary Student) intiative. Using Linux and open source software, schools are able to save a lot of money and computers are in the hands of students every day without having to fight for lab time.

Thanks for linking to me and I think your ideas are right on the money. For a little background, I teach keyboarding/computer skills, so I truly do NOT have a choice whether I have a lab or not, so in my situation, my needs always trump those of *classroom* teachers (hate that term, but widely used - I don't have my own classroom anywhere). I'm in no way saying that's fair, but it is what it is. I think 1:1 is the way to go and in the meantime I'm incredibly lucky to work in the middle school that I'm in (I work in 1 middle school and 10 elementary schools). We have so many more computers than other schools in the district - these were hard-fought for by some very dedicated teachers and administrators. The kind of $$ needed is not always a popular thing to taxpayers and non-tech teachers, so those teachers and administrators dedicated to these initiatives have to have pretty thick skins. I should add parents in there too, since oftentimes PTO funds help pay for new tech. Thanks for a great follow-up on our earlier discussion!
