Michelle: That's frustrating. It seems there should be some discretion on the part of the staff there, regardless of hardline rules.

It just brings me back to the idea that these policies are driving a wedge between staff & students instead of building relationships.

My 15 yr old daughter had her cell phone confiscated today. Class was about to be dismissed, she had it in her hand and wasn't even using it (that's what I heard from the teacher).

I think our admin and security staff have enough to busy themselves without the added cell phone hassle. How many teachers or admin are asked to put away their cell phones all day long?

I agree with you and Darren... we should be harnessing these TOOLS (not distractions) and teaching responsible use.

I've checked her texting records before, and 90% of her texts are to her family... and when she covertly texts at school, it's to me.

Ben,

I'm afraid your situation is likely the norm. Unfortunately, I don't think the norm is always the best.

It's a shame that teachers aren't given the freedom to choose which tools they employ for the teaching and learning that occurs in their own classrooms.

Maybe one day, those that design policy will possess greater vision...
