Here is a social studies wiki, not science, but just to give you an idea of what we do with it--we also use google docs so many things we do are nopt on the wiki.

@Beth: I really appreciate the kind words. It motivates me to share even more when I know what I've been sharing has been helpful to others. Thanks!

Hi, Ben,
You are sharing valuable information for educators who are trying to use wikis in teaching. Your candid snapshots of steps in the process are meaningful to others who are struggling with similar challenges. I think we'll learn a lot from you as you continue to share your successes and challenges along the road to full implementation of wikis as teaching/learning tools. Please keep leading in this area!

I let my students set up the accounts themselves. I did a survey of my students at the beginning of the year and found that 100% of them reported having an email address. I had them send me their username, real name, and email address they used for the account via Google Forms for me to keep track.

Thanks for sending the links along. I've been looking for some science class wikis and these definitely look like they'll be food for thought. I checked them out briefly but will have to spend some more time looking them over this weekend.

Looks cool. Did you create accounts for all of your students or did they set them up? How did you handle email addresses?

Last year I had two wiki projects in my class - a online textbook (http://room34pstext.wikispaces.com) students created to review for our state test and glossary (http://room34psglossary.wikispaces.com). I've also used internal wikis (on Moodle and the Apple Server Wiki software) for group projects and lap reports. This year we're creating a wiki-based periodic table. I just started working on it yesterday, so its a little rough but check it out. Hydrogen is the only element which really works. http://salksperiodictable.wikispaces.com If you come up with any other good wiki ideas definitely share them.
